Definición

  • One of the qualities that a nomenclatural system should have: The nomenclatural system should be “theory-independent” (Lidén et al. 1997), i.e. devised in such a way as not to infringe upon the independence of taxonomic thought and action. The function of a code of nomenclature is simply, and should be restricted to, providing clear rules allowing one to know the valid nomen of any given taxon in any given taxonomy. It should be possible to apply the same rules to all taxonomies and taxonomic systems, without having to discuss the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of the latter. As nicely written by Knapp et al. (2004): “Keep the science out of nomenclature!”. (Dubois 2005c)
