Definition(s)

  • Phenomenon in which the value of participating in an activity increases with the number of participants. The consequence is that members of a group are disadvantaged when deviating from existing norms. For example, a researcher choosing to publish in an open access journal rather than a more ‘prestigious’ subscription journal, could result in reviewers of the author’s future funding applications taking a less favourable view of their work.
