- The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), was established in New York City in 1985 in response to the portrayal of AIDS in the New York Post. During the 1980s and earlier periods, the portrayal of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual (LGBT) persons in the media was either nonexistent or defamatory.
