Virginia Declaration of Rights

Définition(s)

  • The Virginia Declaration of Rights of 1776 was the first bill of rights adopted by an American state and served as an inspiration for authors of later state constitutions, for the United States’ Bill of Rights, and for the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. The Fifth Virginia Revolutionary Convention unanimously adopted the Declaration of Rights in Williamsburg on June 12, 1776, seventeen days before adopting the first written constitution for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
