- Middle school (Grades 6–8, ages 11–13) is characterized by multiple environmental, physical, and cognitive transitions for youth. School contexts change dramatically from elementary schools, which are typically composed of self-contained classrooms and include close teacher-student relationships, to a larger and more impersonal setting in middle school, where there is stronger emphasis on ability grouping or tracking, more stringent grading, fewer decision-making opportunities in the classroom, changing classes, and reduction in recess or physical activity periods.
