  • Alcohol is the most commonly used central nervous system (CNS) depressant in the world. A 2006 survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that, in the past month, 50.9% of individuals in the United States used alcohol, 23.0% had engaged in binge drinking (five or more drinks on one occasion), and 6.9% were considered heavy drinkers (five or more episodes of binge drinking in 1 month).
