  • Culture of poverty is a concept originated by the American anthropologist and researcher Oscar Lewis, whose ethnographic study on some poor families in Mexico City and Puerto Rico examined the causes and consequences of poverty. Lewis, whose academic writings were influenced by his own humble background, was the author of publications such as Five Families: Mexican Case Studies in the Culture of Poverty in 1959 (which focused on poor families living in Mexico City), and The Children of Sanchez (an autobiography of a poor Mexican family).
