anaerobic digestion

Définition(s)

  • Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a form of waste treatment that involves the controlled decomposition of biodegradable and organic wastes. The main outputs of AD are methane, which is considered a renewable form of energy, and a possible fertilizer rich in nitrogen, known as “digestate.” Consequently, AD has played a significant role throughout the world as an alternative to the open dump, modern landfill, or incinerator, all of which represent waste treatment systems with considerably greater environmental risks.
