housing of slaves

Définition(s)

  • It is sometimes mistakenly thought that enslaved Africans entering the coastal slave-holding states of South Carolina and Georgia after the horror of the Middle Passage did so with little more than the clothes on their backs. Archaeological research is showing that, although they may have arrived with few material possessions, Africans brought with them an extensive cultural repertoire, including African traditions of basketry, pottery, music, and religion—as well as architectural knowledge and preferences.
