right to trial by jury

Définition(s)

  • Supreme Court rulings that deal with the constitutional right to a trial by jury. Article III of the Constitution states that “the Trial of all Crimes, except in Cases of Impeachment, shall be by Jury.” In Patton v. United States (1930), the Court held that a jury in a federal criminal case must consist of twelve people, must be supervised by a judge, and must reach a unanimous verdict.
