crime-consumerism nexus

Définition(s)

  • The crime-consumerism nexus is a theoretical concept used by (cultural) criminologists to understand the relationships that exist within consumer-driven capitalist societies between the values and emotions associated with consumerism on the one hand, and various forms of expressive and acquisitive criminality on the other. Conception and Context Originally conceived by the English criminologist Keith Hayward, the crime-consumerism nexus asserts that consumer culture creates and cultivates—especially among young people—new forms of concomitant subjectivity based around desire, individualism, hedonism, and impulsivity.
