PATRIOT Act of 2001

Définition(s)

  • Commonly referred to as the USA PATRIOT Act or simply the PATRIOT Act, the law signed on October 26, 2001, is titled the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001 (or Public Law 107-56). In the immediate aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, there was little congressional debate regarding many controversial provisions that expanded law enforcement authority and limited the civil liberties of citizens and noncitizens involved in terrorism investigations.
