counter-reformation

Définition(s)

  • The Counter-Reformation refers to the revitalized Catholic and specifically Thomist thought in the generations after the Council of Trent, which was concentrated at the University of Salamanca and in the educational institutions recently established by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). This surge in intellectual activity was motivated by the need to address the criticisms leveled against the Catholic Church by the thinkers of the Protestant Reformation, while at the same time defending its traditions against the Reformation's more revolutionary tendencies.
