  • The Buffalo Soldiers were former slaves, freedmen, and black Civil War soldiers who fought for the U.S. Army in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. They played a prominent role in the nineteenth-century United States-Indian Wars (1848–1891), charged side-by-side with Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders up San Juan and Kettle hills during the Spanish-American War (1898), and rode into Mexico with General John J.
