gluttony

Définition(s)

  • The word gluttony has especially Eurocentric origins; the Latin gula, meaning “throat” or “eating to excess;” gluttire, meaning “to swallow” or “gulp down;” and the 12th-century Middle English glotonie or glutonie, which refer most directly to the practice of eating or drinking in excess and in such a manner as to lose control of one's mental and physical faculties, or in fact to do great harm to the body. To eat or drink simply for the pleasure of the experience, or to withhold food from those who are in dire need of it, is also considered gluttonous.
