agitation

Définition(s)

  • According to the American Psychiatric Association'sDiagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR), agitation is excessive, nonproductive, and repetitious motor activity associated with inner tension, marked by behavior such as pacing, fidgeting, and hand wringing. Jiska Cohen-Mansfield and her colleagues based an alternative definition on their observations of patients with dementia: improper spoken or motor activity that an outside observer judges to not result directly from the agitated individual's needs or confusion.
