intentional communities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Définition(s)

  • As the heartland of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation, present-day Germany (and to a lesser extent Austria and Switzerland) is also the birthplace of many early intentional communities, for most early intentional communities were religious in origin. The Anabaptist movement, which denied the validity of infant baptism and urged a return to the shared living of the early Christian church, led to the establishment of the Hutterites and the Bruderhof, two longlived religious intentional communities.
