paradigm blindness

Définition(s)

  • The concept of paradigm blindness implies that individuals, groups, and organizations are unwilling or unable to accept any challenge to their core ways of making sense of the world and determining how they interpret and make sense of what goes on around them—in essence, their worldviews (or weltanschauung—according to philosopher and psychologist William James in 1904). There have been attempts by numerous scholars to describe this process, for example by Thomas Bates (1975), Peter Checkland (1981), and Thomas Kuhn (1996), and the terms hegemony, weltanschauung, and paradigm have all been used at various times to describe and debate the various processes by which such a dominant worldview is developed and sustained.
