speakeasies

Definición

  • A speakeasy was a clandestine bar, saloon, nightclub, or other similar establishment that illegally sold alcohol for consumption during America's era of Prohibition (1919–33). Influenced by America's temperance movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, which denounced and attributed the consumption of alcohol to many of the country's social ills, there was a concerted effort to rid society of alcohol and its ill effects.
