  • According to the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987, homelessness is defined as the lack of a regular and adequate nighttime residence including a nighttime residence that is either a supervised shelter, an institution that provides temporary assistance, or a public or private place not ordinarily used as sleeping accommodations for humans.Homelessness in the United States is a significant social issue with as many as 3.5 million people estimated to be homeless during the course of a year and 700,000 to 800,000 people homeless on any given night.
