- Social work is a profession created and defined within the modern image of the world; therefore, its purposes and goals have been strongly linked to resolving the interests and disputes of the prevailing social and economic system. Historically, social work has been a social discipline that legitimates the capitalist state, that is interested in addressing the social needs and problems of the population, in particular of those most affected by poverty, inequity, and marginal conditions.
