  • The word panic comes from the Greek panikos, of Pan, the goat-like shepherd god. In 490 b.c.e., at the battle of Marathon, he is said to have shouted so loud that the echoes of his voice as it rebounded from the surrounding mountains convinced the Persians that the Athenian forces were much more numerous than was actually the case, causing tumultuous dread to spread among the invaders.
