  • The Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor (KIHD) Study is an epidemiological study of risk factors for atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to heart attack and/or stroke), ischemic heart disease, related disorders (e.g., hypertension), and death in middle-aged and older adults from Kuopio, Finland, and surrounding communities. More than two decades ago, this area in eastern Finland was found to have one of the highest rates of heart disease among men in the world.
