  • The non-aligned movement (NAM) began as an effort by a number of often new, postcolonial nation-states to follow a third course early in the cold war between the capitalism of the first world and the state-socialism of the second world. In retrospect the founding event for the NAM was the 1955 Asia-Africa conference in Bandung, Indonesia, but it would go on to involve key states in Latin America.
