angry Buddhist monk phenomenon

Definición

  • What has been called “angry monk syndrome,” a phenomenon in which protesting Buddhist monks from Southeast Asia became a staple of Western media representation, can be usefully related to Engaged Buddhism, a term used to describe the participation of Buddhist activists in political struggles. Engaged Buddhists believe that the purpose of dharma is not only to heal the individual but also to contribute to social healing, and so they participate in efforts to raise awareness about political and social problems, including economic and political injustices.
