Beguine communities

Definición

  • Spontaneously arising in many localities of the Low Countries of Europe in the later twelfth century, Beguine communities were religious associations that were semimonastic in nature, providing spiritual and actual homes for women of several classes. Adherents took no formal vows of celibacy, poverty, or obedience but otherwise reflected in their lives the piety and sacrificial life of cloistered nuns.
