mediating variable

Definición

  • A mediating variable is one that lies intermediate between independent causal factors and a final outcome. Like MODERATING VARIABLES, mediating variables are seen as intervening factors that can change the impact of X on Y. Mediating variables aim to estimate the way a variable Z affects the impact of X on Y, and they can be estimated in one of four ways: through path analysis, structural equation modeling, proxies embedded in linear regression, and MULTILEVEL MODELING. In PATH ANALYSIS, separate regressions are run for different causal processes. [Source: The SAGE Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods; Mediating Variable]
