Civil Rights Act of 1866

Definición

  • As of January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the Confederacy. Republicans were concerned, however, that winning the war would not permanently end slavery; thus, the Thirteenth Amendment was enacted, abolishing slavery and giving Congress power to enforce abolition.
