  • A Certified Emissions Reduction (CER) refers to 1 metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent that has been sequestered or abated through project activities under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). CERs may be traded or sold through regulatory markets and counted toward attainment of emissions reduction obligations for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Annex 1 (developed country) parties that have Kyoto reduction targets.
