  • Tobacco use is the largest preventable cause of cancer death in developed countries and is responsible for approximately 30% of the cancer mortality that occurs in the United States. Cigarette smoking, in contrast to other forms of tobacco use, developed largely during the 20th century, and it is cigarette smoking that is responsible for the epidemic of lung cancer that began during the 1930s and continues into the new millennium.
