  • On January 9, 1866, Fisk Free Colored School, named in honor of General Clinton B. Fisk, was opened in Nashville, Tennessee. The school, which first offered instruction in the primary subjects of alphabet, lettering, and counting to formerly enslaved Africans of all ages, quickly evolved into Fisk University.
