day labor

Definición

  • As a form of casual employment characterized by a daily search for work and contracts ranging from a few hours to a single day, day labor not only constitutes an increasingly central income-generating strategy of the poor but also epitomizes the precariousness and contingency that have now become widespread and defining features of the new landscape of employment. Demand for day labor has increased as a result of economic restructuring, the decline of unions, and employers’ quest for ever more flexible and disposable labor.
