  • Obesity is a serious and growing threat to children's health. The 1998 estimates of the prevalence of obesity (defined as having a body mass index [BMI] > 95th percentile) in children ages 6 to 17 years was approximately 11%, with an additional 14% identified as overweight (85th–95th percentiles).
