- Addiction is a chronic and relapsing disorder marked by persistent substance use despite a host of negative consequences. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's Controlled Substances Act (CSA) identifies five classes of drugs: narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, and anabolic steroids.
