greenback movement

Definición

  • The Greenback Party was a movement in the United States during the post–Civil War years to inflate the money supply and give “ordinary” citizens the chance to pay their debts and participate more fully in the economic system. In order to provide funding for the Civil War, the Union government issued $450 million in greenbacks, paper money that was not backed by specie, meaning gold.
