property marking/operation identification

Definición

  • The practice of property marking, or as it is known in the United States, Operation Identification (OI), is based on the long-established belief that branding or labeling property with a personal symbol will in some way protect it from theft or ensure its return should it be lost or stolen. There are several reasons for encouraging the marking of property in this way: First, it is intended as a deterrent to burglary; second, it is intended to increase the recovery and return of stolen property; third, it is intended to make it more difficult to dispose of stolen goods; and finally, it is assumed to increase the detection of offenders or their successful prosecution.
