dhimmi

Definición

  • Literally meaning “protected person,” dhimmi is the term applied in early Islam to Christians, Jews, and others (ahl al-kitab, “people of the book”) under Muslim rule who were subjected to various restrictions but allowed to practice their own religions and follow their own legal systems. As dhimmis generally did not serve in the military, they had to pay a special tax, the jizyah or poll tax. [Source: The Encyclopedia of Political Science; Dhimmi]
