gross primary production

Definición

  • Terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is a collection of complex processes performed by photosynthetic organisms that result in the conversion of light energy and water into chemical energy and the subsequent biochemical fixation of carbon dioxide into sugars. Because the supply of organic carbon exerts a dominant control on the activity of heterotrophic organisms, from bacteria to ungulates, GPP is a central process regulating the structure and functioning of ecosystems.
