  • Abolition (or abolitionism) refers to the movement to end the transatlantic slave trade and racial slavery in the United States through the late 17th century to the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment following the American Civil War in December 1865. The first call for an end to slavery in the United States came in 1688 with the “Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery,” a two-page document that said all humans, regardless of their skin color, have rights that should not be violated.
