  • The New York African Free School, founded in 1787 to serve the city's growing free African American population, was among the first nonde-nominational charity schools in U.S. cities. The African Free School provided a valuable route to formal education for a generation of leaders that included Henry Highland Garnett, James McCune Smith, and Alexander Crummel, among others.
