Preferred term

George C. Wallace

Definition(s)

  • Gov. George Corley Wallace (1914–1998) of Alabama made his mark on national politics first as a militant opponent of the civil rights movement and then as a contender for the presidency in the 1960s and 1970s. As an independent candidate in the close election of 1968, Wallace ran one of the strongest third party campaigns of the twentieth century, although not strong enough to deadlock the election as had been feared.
