Hull-House

Definition(s)

  • Hull-House was founded in Chicago in 1886 by progressive reformers Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr and was one of the earliest and most influential social settlements in North America. Social settlements, like other reforms originating in the Progressive Era (1890–1929), were a response to the slum conditions created by the growing urbanization, massive immigration, and rapid industrialization of the late 19th century.
