- Sigma Xi was founded in 1886 at Cornell University by an engineering faculty member and several engineering students who wanted to establish an honor society for scientists and engineers. In 1974, Sigma Xi merged with the Scientific Research Society of America; the present official name, “Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society,” reflects the merger of the two organizations.Sigma Xi has more than 500 chapters in North America and around the world at colleges and universities, government laboratories, and industrial research centers.
