Manhattan Bail Project

Definition(s)

  • The Manhattan Bail Project was undertaken in 1961 by the Vera Institute of Justice to assess whether suspects who were released on a promise to appear in court, as opposed to bail, would make their court appearances. Prior to this time, suspects who could not afford to pay monetary bail had to spend time in jail awaiting their trial. [Source: Encyclopedia of Community Corrections; Manhattan Bail Project]
