Preferred term

interventions for youth violence

Definition(s)

  • Although not as high as crime rates in the early to mid-1990s, a recent increase in violent crimes committed by juveniles has prompted researchers, criminal justice personnel, and communities to develop and implement interventions designed to modify the behaviors of young people as a means of crime and violence prevention. For example, according to recent figures, juvenile arrests for violent index crimes (i.e., murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) have increased with nearly 30% of the violent index crimes attributable to youth offenders.
