Concept information

Preferred term

myelin sheath

Definition(s)

  • A fatty substance formed from glial cells that surrounds neuron axons, increasing the speed of action potentials and allowing muscles to move more efficiently and smoothly. Myelin is found surrounding neurons in parts of the nervous system that require the most urgently delivered information, such as neurons responding to intense sensory information (e.g., a burning surface), which requires reflexive responses.
