Concept information

Preferred term

nuisance parameters

Definition(s)

  • A nuisance parameter is a type of parameter that is of no or only secondary interest in parametric estimation. For example, in a certain statistical model that involves a normally distributed random variable, the researcher's interest often focuses on the estimation of the expectation of the variable µ, whereas the variance of the random variable σ 2 is of no interest and is then considered a nuisance parameter.
