  • Hysteria refers to illnesses in which psychological distress manifests itself in bodily symptoms, a process often termed somaticization. Historically, hysteria was commonly used as a medical diagnosis for patients presenting with a broad range of physical maladies including convulsions, irregular speech or mutism, loss of hearing, sexual dysfunction, and gastrointestinal or genitourinary complaints.
