Definition(s)

  • The origin of the need for standard nutrient intake requirements stemmed from a need to strengthen the U.S. national defense during World War II. In 1943, the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) were established to provide nutrient intake recommendations for good health. RDAs were developed by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences to provide a framework of recommended intake levels of essential nutrients to meet the needs of healthy individuals.
