Preferred term

critical race theory

Definition(s)

  • Critical race theory (CRT) is method of analysis first developed by legal scholars who challenged the prevailing view that the American legal system was colorblind or neutral on race issues and that has since been applied in many other fields. A basic assumption of CRT is that racism is part of the fabric of American society and culture and, thus, affects power relations whether or not the individual actors in any relationship hold explicitly racist views themselves.
